Now this might stir up some debate and conversation as many historians consider William the Conqueror, the first true King of England. Well, I am here to tell you that is false in the eyes of me and that the First true king is of course, King Aethelstan.

I can understand why people would consider William the first true king of England as he set up the line of modern-day England and its people, but the thing is, William just wasn’t the FIRST true king. There are many reasons why I think this but to start, William himself wasn’t even English, he was Norman, from Normandy which is a now a part of the country of France. Aethelstan however, was English, spoke Old English, and was born in what is now Britain. I also consider Aethelstan to be the first true king as he united the kingdoms of England together under one king by defeating the last horde of Vikings and other competitors that inhabited his lands. I know people don’t consider any King before William true English Kings because they were Anglo-Saxon, but they were at least born in the region and spoke the national language unlike William. I also consider the Anglo-Saxons to be English as the English language came from them which is why it is a Germanic language and not a romance one.
